Yonabaru-cho (Yonabaru-cho) is a town belonging to Shimajiri County in the southern part of the main island of Okinawa Prefecture.
It is located on the east coast of the southern part of the main island of Okinawa, about 9 km east of Naha city, which is the prefectural capital of Okinawa Prefecture, and faces Nakagusuku Bay (Japanese: Nakagusukuwan, Okinawan dialect: Chujowan). With an area of 5.18 km2, it is the largest municipality on the main island of Okinawa, and the second-smallest municipality in Okinawa Prefecture after Tonaki Village.
A hilly forest called Amagomori (133 m) (Japanese: amago newt, Okinawan dialect: amagoimui) in the southeast of the town, and Untamamori (158m) (Japanese: Untamamori, Okinawan dialect: untamamui), which rises northwest of the town on the border with Nishihara-cho, it is a flat area stretching out onto the coastline overlooking Nakagusuku Bay in front.
The story of Untamagiru, a bandit trapped in Untamamori, is widely known in Okinawa, and the film “Untamagiru” of the same name received the Japan Film Directors Association Newcomer Award and the Berlin International Film Festival Caligari Award.
